Brummel Eye Splice These instructions for the Brummel Eye Splice are recommended for 12 strand single/hollow braid ropes made with polyester or nylon, such as our Static-12 and Static-12DS lines. Create a secure, locked eye splice in a hollow braid rope. The final strength of the Brummel Splice should be 90 – 100% of the rope’s breaking strain. This version of the Brummel only requires access to one end of the rope being spliced and is intended for 12 strand single/hollow braid ropes made with polyester or nylon, such as our Static-12 and Static-12DS lines. Solutions: The Long Bury and Locked Brummel both create secure eye splices. Strength: The intended strength is derived from the tail being tapered and buried through the center of the standing end – which exerts a powerful gripping action under tension the force in the standing end is progressively shared between the two lines. Found in: Splicing McDonald Brummel Technique: Margie McDonald, who illustrates the Brion Toss/Margie McDonald series of Working Rope books, developed the technique shown in this animation. However, the lock distorts the fibers and would lower the breaking strain if used alone. The Brummel Lock: When completed, the two parts of the splice lie closely against each other to make the lock. Single braids in all materials are best to use a Brummel splice where the tail and main rope are interlinked through each other to make a simple high strength. ![]() The short ends were used here to allow close-up photography. Warning: in practice use a much longer tail and a more gradual taper – see below. In practice, using a fid makes the process easier, especially when passing the long buried tail up the center of the standing end. Overlapping with the previous tuck, pass the splicing tool up the other side and pull. A hollow fid is ideal for splicing but this approach is so simple that a. Pass the splicing tool up to exit beside the first tuck. Brummel Eye Splice, provides a perfectly serviceable splice in this type of line. Pass the first end and then the second to make a Brummel Eye Splice. Brummel Structure: The animation shows how the Locked Brummel Splice can be tied when both ends are available to be threaded through the rope. Creates a rope loop using hollow-braid rope.
